June 02, 2006
Telekom Malaysia has signed an MOU with several Asian companies to build a 20,000-kilometer-long undersea broadband cable system, called Asia-America Gateway, supporting voice and data communications traffic between Southeast Asia and the United States. Other members of the consortium are Hong Kong's REACH, Thailand's CAT Telecom, PLDT of the Philippines, Singapore's StarHub, Vietnam's VNPT, and AiTi of Brunei Darussalam. This undersea cable system is expected to be completed in early 2008 with plans for further expansion. Its minimum capacity is 1.28 terabits.
